Cook and cock mix up
Living in SwedenOne of my very early mistakes with the Swedish language was over 5 years ago and was a little embarrassing, so I thought I would share.
While walking through a Swedish “My First Dictionary” with Ren's mum, she pointed to a picture of a kitchen. Now the Swedish word for kitchen is spelt: ”kök”, and not knowing the first 'k' is pronounced “shh” and 'ö' is a bit like “err” I guessed “coook”. But this turned out to be slang for penis.
There is also another similar pitfall when it comes to the word for “chef”, “kock” I have also heard pronouncedby learners as, erm , “coook”, which is the slang for....
So when I find myself in polite company, I really do sweat about complimenting the cock, no, coook, no erm...
I'll get my coat....
That is all.
