Happy Birthday.
Living in SwedenRecently it was my birthday. We each have one, once a year so it is no big deal. But. I thought I would share some of the little differences here. Firstly the birthday song is a little more imaginative than just repeating “Happy Birthday to you” several times and rounding it off with a “...dear so and so”.
It is (English Translation):
Yes, may you live, Yes, may you live,
Yes, may you live for a hundred years.
Yes, may you live, Yes, may you live,
Yes, may you live for a hundred years.
Oh sure, you will live, Oh sure, you
will live,
Oh sure, you will live for a hundred
years.
Oh sure, you will live, Oh sure, you
will live,
Oh sure, you will live for a hundred
years.
"A four fold cheer ... cheer for you. HURRAH, HURRAH, HURRAH, HURRAH."
I like the idea of promoting long life,
and four cheers at the end and not three.
Now being the land of song, people will
phone you up, and while you unexpectedly answer the phone, they will
sing this to you down the phone. In the case of one of our friends,
she stood on our doorstep and sang to me by herself. Very impressive.
I was touched.
Also, it is a real treat to receive cards, e-cards, emails and SMS text messages from the UK, it's nice not to be forgotten. So if you sent me something, and you are reading this, and I have yet to say thank you; Thank you.
Not quite the usual tradition, Ren bought me a “Semla” bun with a birthday candle in it.
Usually eaten on Shrove Tuesday here in Sweden, it was still very much appreciated.
That is all.
